On 19th October 2010, 275 industry members and guests gathered at the House Of Blues in Hollywood for an evening benefiting Education Through Music Los Angeles. The non-profit organization promotes music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools, and the fifth annual gala saw Michael presented with a Shining Star Award for his work on the advisory board.
The music-filled evening included a violin and guitar performance of the main theme from Up by students from ETM-LA and the King-Drew Magnet High School, which received a standing ovation.
Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse presented Michael with his award, and Michael shared how important music is for children.
"What people seem to forget about child development is that while math and science are essential components of early education, so are the arts. In fact, I would argue that without a proper education in music and art, your math and science skills are harder to attain. A proper education in the arts is like having math, science, social studies and history all rolled into one. Music and art are not just frivolous playtime for the kids - it's essential to a proper and well rounded education. It's intrinsic to the life experience, teaching us to relate to our world in invaluable ways. That we haven't done a better job educating the public about this is one of our great failings as a community." - Michael Giacchino
Executive Director for ETM-LA, Victoria Lanier, said "Michael has generously given his time, inviting students to recording sessions, visiting our music students, and inspiring them to work hard and follow their dreams. Michael is a tremendous champion for keeping music in the schools."
Other film composers showing their support included John Debney and James Dooley. Further information on ETM-LA can be found here.
